چکیده

Material and methods The study was conducted in the Venereal Diseases Department, St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London. The diagnosis of nongonococcal urethritis was based on the presence of a sexually acquired urethral discharge, containing abundant polymorphonuclear leucocytes, shown not to be due to gonorrhoea by negative findings in Gramstained smears and by negative results to cultures. Cases in which the discharge was associated with Candida, or with Trichomonas vaginalis demonstrated in wet smears, were excluded. Patients who presented with insufficient urethral discharge for diagnostic purposes were reexamined by the early-morning smear procedure. Gases were unselected and after diagnosis were allocated to one of three treatment groups: Group A Oxytetracycline 500 mg. three times a day for 5 days Group B Oxytetracycline 250 mg. four times a day for 21 days Group C Oxytetracycline 500 mg. four times a day for 10 days.

COMPARISON OF OXYTETRACYCLINE AND CHLORTETRACYCLINE IN THE TREATMENT OF NON-GONOCOCCAL URETHRITIS*t

Since the wide-range orally administered antibiotics, aureomycin (Finland and others, 1948) and terramycin (Willcox, 1951; Willcox and Findlay, 1952), were first reported as effective in nongonococcal urethritis the question has arisen of their relative efficacy. In a previous paper a comparison was made of the relative efficacy of terramycin, aureomycin, chloramphenicol, sulphonamides, strepto...

Treatment of non-gonococcal urethritis with intramuscular tetracycline (terramycin).

The place of oral oxytetracycline hydrochloride (Terramycin) therapy in the treatment of nongonococcal urethritis (N.G.U.) is well established (Harkness, 1953; Willcox, 1957; Morton and Read, 1957). Success rates of about 85 per cent. are above those obtained by other antibiotics, sulphomanides, or a combination of these. The trial reported below was undertaken at a time when a degree of penici...

Long-term triple tetracycline ("Deteclo") treatment of non-specific urethritis.

Non-specific urethritis (NSU) continues to be the venereologist's most perplexing problem, both diagnostically and therapeutically. The evidence available strongly suggests that the condition is due to an infection, not least because a high percentage of sufferers show prompt symptomatic response to broad-spectrum antibiotics, particularly the tetra-cyclines. Morton and Read (1957), and more re...
